If you lose your phone, all your data is useless because the key is on your phone. So using icloud with e2ee is basically using a phone with no icloud backup a all.

* you can have more than one device

* you can have a trusted contact to get you the keys

* you can have recovery codes

That's why you keep a copy of the key somewhere else.
