History has had many groundbreaking discoveries. It seems foolish to assume that is over. There will be more ground breaking discoveries, and there will be more iterative discoveries. People are so interested in room temp superconductors and stable fusion, because they CAN exist, and likely will exist.

'High' temperature super conductors were only recently discovered, and only a couple of years ago lanthanum decahydride was shown to transition at -10F. It seems odd to me to assume that this hurdle isn't going to be overcome, and even stranger to disparage others for thinking so.
