I'm sure some scientist said the same thing about some early stage germ of a discovery once upon a time. But it's true, we still get very far along with Newtonian physics, we don't need a full working knowledge of quantum mechanics to get our jobs done day-to-day. Not that what we're doing is anything comparable, but maybe the analogy fits somewhat.
